3 Common Misconceptions About Oil Changes

Posted April 26, 2024

You need to have oil in your vehicle to keep its engine running smoothly and not overheating. While the amount varies according to the model of your car or truck, you usually need to put in five to seven quarts, according to Love to Know. But there are a lot of misconceptions about making an oil change. Here are three of them.

1. You Need to Change Your Oil Every 3,000 Miles

Like all misconceptions or myths, there’s a bit of truth. Yes, it was a good idea to live by that rule of thumb in the past when engines weren’t as advanced as they are now. Ultimately, it depends on the vehicle you drive and what your manual says. Some vehicles may be capable of lasting longer between each oil change. Some can last up to 7,500 miles or more before needing to be taken into a shop.

2. Before You Go on a Long Trip, Change Your Oil

Again, this isn’t like the past. Engines are made to last for longer road trips. The only time that you should think about doing this is if you’re already reaching the upper threshold of your mileage. Then, you can bring it to the professionals. Of course, you can always bring your vehicle into the shop before a road trip to make sure there are no other potential issues before you embark on the drive, too.

3. You Can Only Use One Type of Oil

There are some who are regular oil purists, while others like to use synthetic oil. They may feel that the two should never mix, i.e. you shouldn’t switch between the two types. This isn’t necessarily true. The only thing you should do is check that the viscosity matches the type of engine that you have. It won’t affect performance.

The best thing to do is talk to an auto professional about any questions that you might have. They can steer you in the right direction and also debunk any misconceptions, so you can enjoy using your vehicle.
